You may have never been to a Club Med, but chances are, you've heard
their name. Club Med, a French creation, has been around for a long
while. What began as a tent village on the island of Majorca is now
a collection of 81 resorts ("villages") all across the world.
Don't
get Club Med confused with the all-inclusive resorts lining the
beach at Cancun. Club Med villages are oriented for folks and families
who want to be active and socially engaged, but without some of
the high-end extras you'll find in a traditional upscale hotel.
What they lack in room amenities, they make up for in sports programs
and wonderful cuisine. And, while food is plentiful and delightful
for a meal, you won't find the all-you-can-eat mentality seen on
mass-market cruise ships.
Americans frequent particular Club Med destinations - Mexico, Caribbean,
and a few Pacific delights for honeymooners. However, for the adventurous
family, there are some wonderful Club Med villages in Europe, and
North Africa (hence the "Med" in the name). You'll find
an easy social setting led by fun-loving G.O.s (Gracious Organizers),
and will chat with well-traveled, educated families.
Club Med Villages are divided into Villages for Families, Villages
for Everyone, and Villages for Adults. The Villages for Families
offer children's programs for babies as young as 4 months. Children
are grouped together by age, and have a blast. Think of Club Med
as a sophisticated Summer Camp for all ages.
Club
Med Villages also offer (at an additional cost) excursion tours
for guests. This allows you to get out there and see the sights,
with a tour group of newfound friends.
Great
for: families with varying ability levels; families with young children
(too little to attend other adventure destinations); folks who want
to unpack once while having an active holiday; folks who want a
cross between an adventure and a beachfront vacation.
New for 2006 is Club Med Cancun, now for families! This Club Med
Village has undergone a complete makeover and is now accepting families
of all ages.
